Backstage Concert Passes and You: How Not to Blow It
You are so excited that you just might wet yourself every time you think about the backstage concert passes you scored for the upcoming show. You’re finally going to meet the band in person and there’s a chance you could get chosen to hang around after the show…if you don’t blow it, that is.
The trick to getting backstage and staying there is knowing the etiquette. You have to recognize first and foremost that the band members are people too. While they may not be people just like you, they’re still people, and no one likes to deal with others who are annoying, idiotic or rude. This means don’t go running up to the lead singer and fall trembling at his feet, gushing about how you’ve dreamt of this moment since you were six. Don’t eat all the food, drink all the beer, and then try to cozy up with the bassist and expect her to think that your too-loud voice and drunken slurs are entertaining. Don’t try to strike up a conversation with the drummer by telling him that you’ve never seen anyone keep a beat like he does, or ask him if he’ll roll a few out just for you.
No matter how excited you are, keep your cool. Show some restraint, respect their boundaries, and try to relax as much as your nerves will allow. If you want to try talking to them, at least attempt to make it interesting rather than telling them something they hear all the time and that may come off as star-struck or asinine. Many stars are more interested in just kicking back and hanging out after the show than they are in dealing with high maintenance fans. Approaching them like a potential friend will get you further than treating them like they walk on water.
