Among the presently available televisions, LED televisions are amongst the most popular with the number of LED television sales ever increasing. As always people across the world are interested in spending their free time by watching television and the high picture quality that comes with LED TVs is proving popular. LED televisions set the standard for those who require high definition televisions.

Previous televisions now seem inferior in colour reproduction, contrast and smoothness of images when compared with the advancements in this new form of TV. They display qualities that are inherent with LEDs which were not possible in the other types of technologies.

LED and LCD televisions are very similar with the exception that LED televisions use LED lights to provide the lighting to the display. The lighting method comes in two configurations for LED televisions, one is the back-lit television and another is the edge-lit television. In the back lit LED televisions the LED’s are placed at the back of the screens and in the edge lit LED televisions the LED’s are placed in the perimeter of the televisions.

In the UK the Advertising Standards Authority criticized some promotional information relating to the LED TV. Revisions have had to be made so as not to mislead the public into thinking that they are something they are not, clarifying that the LEDs in LED televisions just refers to the lighting method used for these sets.

There are normally some negatives for any particular product. If there is one with LED televisions it is that the screen size tends to be large, in the order of 40 inches and above. They feature technological improvements like the back lit and edge lit LED lighting which makes them superior in other aspects when compared to older TVs.

Purchasing LED TVs with their improved range of color and quality is reflected in the cost of the television. People are buying LED TVs in spite of its high cost only because of the intensity in the picture quality it gives them when watching an action film, BluRay discs or the latest games consoles. Another advantage of the LED television is that, it reduces the power consumption by almost 40 percent.

Because of the extra competition in the market between the LED, LCD and plasma televisions, users are confused with the models available making their purchasing choice difficult. A good comparison between these televisions is helpful. The LCD televisions are very good value and have a large range of sizes. Plasma and LED TVs produce better picture quality and come in larger screen sizes which is reflected in their greater costs.

Samsung, Sony, LG and JVC all produce televisions which use LEDs in their designs. To judge the benefits and application of LEDs you need to view some of these TVs for yourself. Only then will you see if the price justifies the improved quality and designs.
